Heba Bsat – Normally, I wouldn’t be caught dead watching Omar W Salma. No, I’m not trying to sound cool. Few of my all time favorite movies are Egyptian: Mafia, Africano, Sahar El Layali, Zarf Tarek, etc.. But I was never a fan of this series because simply put: it a series of sexist shallow movies, just like many Arabic movies lately. I know I sound like a 90-year-old, but it’s the truth. Anyway, I was dragged to this one by my friends, so I caved and ended up watching it.
However, If I say I wasn’t entertained, I would totally be lying. I laughed (out loud, sometimes) not because of its (incredibly boring) storyline but because of the leads’ fascinating humor. Yes, it’s Tamer Hosny & May Ezzidine’s humor and charisma that make this movie watchable. And it’s why this ‘saga’ has become so popular even though it’s the most redundant one I’ve ever watched.
Once again, Omar is sick of his relationship with Salma. Once again, he’s tired of this monogamous relationship. But, this time, in addition to cheating her, he decides he wants to become a singer, a sha’abi singer. And to be honest, he sucks at it. They fight. She divorces him. He pretends he’s engaged to a Lebanese slut portrayed by Lamita. She pretends she’s engaged to a wrestler. He kidnaps the kids and pretends he’s a mafia leader. It turns out it’s all these games are arranged by his father so they would get back together. They make up. The end. Yep, that’s the story, the whole freakin’ story. There’s nothing to it. It’s just like Omar W Salma 2, only worse.
Sadly, though, I enjoyed it. Yep, I did. I wanted to hate it so bad because it pissed me off a lot of times. It pissed me off that he would cheat on her and then call her names and the audience would find it funny. It pissed me off that no one other than myself was irritated by Omar’s attitude. He’s a douche.
But the truth is Tamer Hosny is one funny actor. He’s charming and can make you giggle all through the movie – whichever movie he’s in. His physical humor is just awe-striking. He can make impressions, he can dance .. he can do anything he puts his mind to and it actually makes you laugh. In the movie, he imitates May Ezzidine and pulls it off remarkably. There’s this scene in the movie where he sounds JUST like her. It’s creep but so good. He kicks ass. He dresses as Spider Man in another, and it’s all stupidly hilarious.
Likewise, May Ezzidine is adorable. Her character is so naive and so innocent that, I think, no actress other than May Ezzidine would portray her ideally. As a woman, I sympathized with her character a lot. But the way she was jealous of Lamita’s character was SO DAMN funny! She was the typical Egyptian girl jealous of the “sexy” Lebanese woman. She probably had the best one-liners of the movie!
Talking about “sexy” Lebanese women, is that how the world sees us? Let’s face it, they only know Lebanese women through media, especially through Egyptian movies. In those movies, we’re portrayed as women we’re not. We’re portrayed as those to-die-for ladies who have nothing better to do in life than look hot which is really really not true. And any Lebanese can tell you that. So, please, sell-out actresses, if you wanna be like that, just pretend you’re not Lebanese. Thank you.
If the two leads were cast in a well-written movie, I would have totally fallen in love with it because they have this talent that no other actors in the Arab World have. They have this talent to make you feel better, to make you laugh. As a team, they’re one and only. We love them TOGETHER. They’ve become this iconic couple that we root for even though the last two movies have kinda ruined them. The storyline, though, is just SO bad that you can’t help but hate it. In really plain words: it’s a stupid stupid movie starring wonderful actors.
