Heba Bsat – “Ma Bkhaf” is probably one of the most empowering songs I have ever heard. It’s how easily this song makes you want to scream your guts out. After listening to this song, I ended up with a life-changing realization.

Since we’re kids, we’re taught to always stay within limits; our parents are always afraid we end up corrupted. And as we grow up, we somehow learn to camouflage our interests and our desires so they’d stay within “limits”. It’s just that these limits have always been “social” restrictions. You become what your family and peers want you to be without admitting that you don’t want all these things they’re asking for. You look at yourself in the mirror, and the person you’re seeing isn’t that person you want to be. You don’t want to be a doctor. You don’t want to listen to traditional Arabic songs. You don’t want to be thin. You don’t want to marry. You don’t want to be straight.

Nonetheless, you’re afraid to acknowledge your real personality because you know you won’t be accepted. You will be talked about and you will be harassed just because you’re something else than everyone out there. But the thing is, if you can’t be satisfied with whom you are, why live at all? Why live when you know you can’t be that person you have always witnessed in your day dreams? Why live if you can’t tell everyone about the genuine you?

After listening to this song, I understood that no one should be ashamed of whom he is; however different he may be. I understood that to live happily you should just be indifferent to all those violating comments you may be faced with. You should be open to all those negative criticism without letting any of it in. And most importantly: “Enjoy who you are. Don’t hate yourself for what you aren’t.”

Ma Bkhaf:
